Pack Copy Approval Process

Overview:

  • The Pack Copy Approval Process is a critical component in the packaging and labeling workflow, particularly for food and CPG companies. This process involves the meticulous organization and management of all content that appears on a product's packaging – from ingredient lists and nutritional information to branding elements and regulatory information. It's a key step in ensuring that the package accurately and effectively communicates the product's attributes and complies with industry regulations.

Challenges:

  • Companies face numerous challenges in this process, such as ensuring accuracy of content, maintaining brand consistency across different products, and adhering to varying regional and global regulatory standards. Additionally, managing the multitude of content elements like text, graphics, and symbols in a coherent and appealing way can be complex and time-consuming.

How ManageArtworks addresses these challenges?

  • Centralized content management: ManageArtworks provides a unified platform for collating, routing, approving, translating and exporting pack content. The system emphasizes content reuse which ensures consistency and allows stakeholders to reuse previously approved content wherever applicable.

Below is an image of how the ManageArtworks Copy Manager works in managing all the pack content

  • Content request: The person initiating the copy request must fill in basic information on the product (product name, brand, size, etc.) so that content editors know exactly for what product they are contributing content.
  • Copy checklist: Its best practice to create copy templates for different product categories where each template is a collection of copy elements that typically go on the product. Based on the content request metadata, the Copy Manager can pull in not just a checklist of copy elements, but also the values for these.
  • Pre-approved content: Content which exists in other systems like a PLM or Formulation / Recipe Management systems can be pulled in to avoid keying them again.
  • Content collation and approval: The Copy Manager routes the request to different department stakeholders for their inputs. These copy editors can key-in the content or reuse existing content from the content library. Content creation is an iterative process, and the system allows for content approval, rejection, and re-work. Approved content can also be unapproved if there is a last-minute change. Each copy element has its own lifecycle and can go through numerous versions before being approved. Throughout the content creation process all stakeholders have not only visibility into the overall pack content but can also add their comments and suggestions on any content. Besides filling in the content, the content system also captures instructions for the designer on font size and content placement as per regulatory requirements.
  • Translation: Content translation can be done by 3rd party agencies or in-house regional stakeholders. Previously translated and approved content is available for reuse, and this can reduce the cost of repeated translation besides saving time.
  • Content export: If your artwork designer is using the ManageArtworks Adobe Plugin along with the Copy Manager, the approved content flows seamlessly from the Copy Manager into Adobe Illustrator or Adobe InDesign. The content can also be exported as an XML, JSON or Excel file.

Benefits of using ManageArtworks for Pack Copy Approval Process:

Packaging Concepts – real world examples:

  • This example of a Trident Xtra Care packet was first place winner in the Student category of the 2015 Dieline awards and garnered some very positive attention for designer Hani Douaji.  It takes a familiar product and reimagines it in a fun way that is sure to win a second glance from consumers as they browse the shelves in the checkout lane.
  • This design concept is minimalistic, fun and, most importantly, does a good job of housing the product. It highlights the product - it’s often easy to forget that what makes packaging great is that it makes the product its centerpiece.
  • With a redesign that resulted in a sales increase of 1000% , Nathan Frank, Founder of Help Remedies, had this to say about the work, “Pearlfisher has done a great job in enhancing our identity so that it communicates everything we have to say without spelling it out, literally.”
The colourful packs feature a simple concept that revolves around a specific problem. Taking care of your health can feel stressful and scary. Help Remedies wanted to eliminate that feeling and empower you to make your own health decisions through simpler language and simpler medicine. Besides having a simple and clean design, the packaging itself was done with sustainability in mind.
